Helsingin päärautatieasema (Helsinki Central Railway Station) was built in 1919, just two years after Finnish independence, and designed by noted Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. The station fronts on Kaivokatu, where a busy tram stop interchanges traffic with the Metro below; Railway Square is located on the east (righrt) side of the building. Local and express buses serve platforms on both sides od the station.
