Also, my high school in Vermont did not have covered bicycle parking! Most of the bikes you see here are the same sort of Chinese-made “mountain” bikes you’d see a Walmart; back in 1988 Finland maintained high trade barriers and nearly all bikes on the road were made domestically by the Tunturi factory — most with planetary-gear three-speed hubs and coaster brakes. Of course, I had to buy a “proper” bike, a 12-speed with derailler shifting, but it was still a Tunturi. (I paid 1200 markkaa for it used, at a local bike shop, and sold it for about 800 when I left the country the following spring.)
