A day trip to Turku

Puropellon koulu

Also, my high school in Vermont did not have covered bicycle parking! Most of the bikes you see here are the same sort of Chinese-made “mountain” bikes you’d see a Walmart; back in 1988 Finland maintained high trade barriers and nearly all bikes on the road were made domestically by the Tunturi factory — most with planetary-gear three-speed hubs and coaster brakes. Of course, I had to buy a “proper” bike, a 12-speed with derailler shifting, but it was still a Tunturi. (I paid 1200 markkaa for it used, at a local bike shop, and sold it for about 800 when I left the country the following spring.)
